6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing, Umbwe Route

$1,550

About this tour

The 6-day Umbwe Route offers one of the most direct and challenging ascents to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steepness and relatively low traffic, the Umbwe Route is ideal for experienced hikers looking for a more rugged and remote experience. Starting from the southern side of the mountain, this route quickly takes you into the heart of Kilimanjaro’s rainforest, offering an immersive wilderness experience. Despite its tough terrain, the Umbwe Route rewards adventurers with stunning views, unique ecosystems, and a sense of solitude that is hard to find on the more popular routes.

This route is designed for those who are looking for a more strenuous challenge, with the advantage of a shorter trekking time compared to other routes. While the 6-day itinerary gives you limited time for acclimatization, it’s perfect for those who are confident in their physical conditioning and have previous hiking experience. As you ascend through dense rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, you’ll experience a variety of landscapes, each more spectacular than the last. The reward for conquering the Umbwe Route is the summit at Uhuru Peak, where you can take in the expansive views of the African continent from the roof of the world.

What Makes This Trip Special?

The Umbwe Route is known for its steep and direct ascent, making it ideal for experienced trekkers looking for a tough challenge. The route’s rugged nature offers a sense of adventure and accomplishment from the start to the summit.

One of the standout features of the Umbwe Route is its limited foot traffic. Unlike more popular routes like Marangu or Machame, the Umbwe route allows you to experience the mountain in relative solitude, with fewer trekkers on the trail.

From the dense rainforest on the lower slopes to the alpine desert near the summit, the route provides a diverse range of ecosystems, offering trekkers a unique opportunity to experience various Kilimanjaro landscapes in a short time.

As you ascend, you’ll be treated to dramatic views of the mountain, including iconic landmarks like the Barranco Wall and the high-altitude glaciers. The visual experience is both awe-inspiring and rewarding.

The direct route gives trekkers an intensive ascent which encourages better acclimatization, a key factor in helping to avoid altitude sickness. It allows trekkers to push their limits while still reaching the summit successfully.

The Umbwe Route is challenging, but with the help of experienced guides and a well-prepared support crew, trekkers can rest assured that they have the necessary expertise to reach the summit safely and efficiently.

Day by day Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

  • Elevation: 1,640m to 2,850m
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles
  • Habitat: Rainforest

The journey begins at Umbwe Gate, where you’ll be greeted by your guide and crew before setting off on the trail. The first day’s hike takes you through the lush rainforest that covers the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is steep and relatively challenging, offering little respite as you make your way up. The dense vegetation provides a unique atmosphere, with towering trees, ferns, and moss-covered rocks creating an enchanting environment. As you climb higher, the air becomes cooler, and you will begin to feel the altitude. By the end of the day, you will reach Umbwe Camp, situated at 2,850 meters, where you can relax and enjoy your first mountain camp experience.

  • Meals: Full board

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Elevation: 2,850m to 3,950m
  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
  • Distance: 7 km / 4.3 miles
  • Habitat: Rainforest, Moorland

On day two, you’ll continue your ascent as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The terrain becomes slightly more open, but the trail remains challenging due to the steepness. You’ll pass through the famous Barranco Valley, with its towering cliffs and the Barranco Wall, a key landmark on the route. The Barranco Wall is an exciting and somewhat technical part of the journey, requiring a bit of scrambling to ascend, but the views from the top make it all worthwhile. After navigating the wall, you’ll reach Barranco Camp, which offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape, including the majestic summit of Kilimanjaro. The camp sits at 3,950 meters, providing you with another opportunity to acclimatize.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3,950m to 4,035m
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 5 km / 3.1 miles
  • Habitat: Moorland

Day three takes you from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp. This section of the trek involves a series of ascents and descents as you navigate the rolling hills of the moorland zone. The trail offers panoramic views of the valleys below and the vastness of Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude landscape. While the day is shorter in terms of hiking time, it remains strenuous due to the constant changes in elevation. Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, located at 4,035 meters, you will be surrounded by towering rock formations and have great views of the surrounding area. The camp offers a good opportunity to rest and hydrate before the next day’s ascent.

  • Meals: Full Board

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

On day four, you’ll make the trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. This is a relatively short hike, but the steepness of the terrain will still present a challenge. As you ascend, the environment transitions to the alpine desert, where vegetation becomes sparse and the air grows thinner. Barafu Camp, located at 4,640 meters, marks the final stop before your summit push. After reaching camp, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the long day ahead. It’s important to stay hydrated and eat well, as you’ll need all your energy for the summit.

  • Meals: Full Board

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

  • Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,100m
  • Hiking Time: 12-14 hours
  • Distance: 13 km / 8.1 miles
  • Habitat: Arctic, Moorland

This is the most challenging day of the trek. You will start your summit attempt early in the morning, typically around midnight, to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and to give yourself the best chance of reaching the summit before the afternoon heat. The climb to Uhuru Peak involves steep, gradual sections, and you will pass through Stella Point (5,730m) before making the final push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. After reaching the summit, take time to soak in the spectacular views and enjoy the sense of accomplishment. Afterward, you will begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short break before continuing down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters. This part of the descent is long and tiring, but you will be rewarded with stunning views of the lower slopes of the mountain and the rainforest below.

  • Meals: Fullboard

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles
  • Habitat: Rainforest

On the final day of your trek, you’ll descend from Mweka Camp back to Mweka Gate. The trail through the rainforest is beautiful, with lush vegetation and the sounds of birds and wildlife filling the air. As you make your way down, you’ll notice the temperature rising and the atmosphere becoming more humid. Once you reach the gate, your team will congratulate you on your accomplishment, and you’ll be transferred back to your hotel to rest and celebrate. This final descent provides a perfect ending to an unforgettable journey, and you’ll leave Kilimanjaro with lasting memories of the incredible landscapes and the achievement of summiting Africa’s highest peak.
