Ngorongoro Crater

Highlight

The Ngorongoro Crater, located in northern Tanzania, is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, spanning approximately 16 to 19 kilometers in diameter. Formed about 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed after a significant eruption, the crater covers an area of 264 square kilometers.

This natural amphitheater is renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting around 25,000 large mammals, including wildebeest, zebras, elands, and buffaloes. Notably, it sustains one of the highest densities of lion populations globally.

The crater’s diverse ecosystems encompass grasslands, acacia forests, and the central Lake Magadi, a soda lake attracting numerous bird species. The steep walls, rising up to 600 meters, create a unique enclosed environment that supports this vibrant wildlife.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the Ngorongoro Crater is part of the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which spans 809,440 hectares. This area exemplifies a harmonious coexistence of wildlife and the semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists, who practice traditional livestock grazing within the region.

Today, the Ngorongoro Crater stands as a testament to Tanzania’s natural heritage, offering unparalleled opportunities for wildlife observation and ecological research.
