Saadani National Park, established in 2005, is Tanzania’s 13th national park, encompassing approximately 1,100 square kilometers. Uniquely positioned along the Indian Ocean, it is the only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa boasting a beachfront, where the bush meets the beach.
The park’s diverse ecosystems include coastal forests, mangroves, salt flats, and open grasslands. This variety supports a rich array of wildlife, such as lions, African bush elephants, Cape buffaloes, leopards, Masai giraffes, and hippopotamuses. Notably, Saadani is home to four of the “Big Five” game animals.
Visitors to Saadani can experience traditional game drives alongside river excursions on the Wami River, offering sightings of crocodiles, hippos, and diverse bird species. The park’s coastal location allows for unique beachside relaxation, making it a distinctive destination where wildlife viewing and beach leisure converge.
Despite its relative youth as a national park, Saadani offers a tranquil and less crowded alternative to more frequented Tanzanian parks, providing an intimate and varied safari experience.
From Dar es Salaam: Embark on a journey covering approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles), which typically takes 3 to 4 hours. The route traverses Chalinze town, leading to the park’s entrance.
From Tanga: Travelers can drive through Pangani to the Mkwaja Gate, covering about 120 kilometers on an unpaved road, a trip lasting approximately 4 to 5 hours.
Charter Flights: Several carriers, including Safari Air Link, Coastal Aviation, and Auric Air, offer scheduled flights connecting Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Saadani. These flights provide a swift and scenic route to the park.
