Gombe National Park

Highlight

Gombe National Park, established in 1968, is Tanzania’s smallest national park, covering approximately 52 square kilometers along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Despite its modest size, it boasts a rich tapestry of ecosystems, including grasslands, woodlands, and tropical rainforests, all set against the backdrop of steep valleys and the serene lake.

The park is globally renowned for its association with primatologist Jane Goodall, who began her pioneering research on chimpanzee behavior here in 1960. Her groundbreaking observations have significantly advanced our understanding of primate social structures and behaviors.

Visitors to Gombe can embark on guided treks to observe the park’s resident chimpanzee communities, such as the Kasakela group. Beyond chimpanzees, the park is home to other primates like vervet monkeys, red colobus, and baboons. The diverse habitats also support over 200 bird species, bush pigs, and various reptiles, including leopards and snakes.

Accessible only by boat from Kigoma, Gombe offers a unique and intimate wildlife experience, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike
