Mount Kilimanjaro National Park

Highlight

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, situated in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, is home to Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, which rises to 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) above sea level. The park encompasses approximately 1,688 square kilometers (652 square miles) and includes the entire Mount Kilimanjaro massif, featuring three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

Established as a national park in 1973, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The park’s diverse ecosystems range from tropical rainforests at lower elevations to alpine deserts and glaciers near the summit. This variation supports a wide array of flora and fauna, including elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and various primates.

Mount Kilimanjaro is renowned for its accessibility to climbers, offering several routes to the summit that traverse different ecological zones. The park attracts thousands of trekkers annually, drawn by the challenge of reaching the summit and the opportunity to experience its unique habitats.

In addition to mountaineering, the park offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, bird watching, and cultural experiences with the indigenous Chaga people. The nearest town, Moshi, serves as a gateway for visitors, providing accommodations and guiding services.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), which oversees conservation efforts and visitor services. The park’s diverse ecosystems and cultural significance make it a vital natural and cultural heritage site.
