Katavi National Park

Highlight

Katavi National Park, located in western Tanzania, is one of the country’s most pristine and rugged nature reserves. Established in 1974, it spans approximately 4,471 square kilometers, making it the third-largest national park in Tanzania.

The park is renowned for its vast floodplains, dense woodlands, and seasonal lakes, creating a diverse ecosystem that supports a wide array of wildlife. During the dry season, the seasonal lakes recede, concentrating wildlife around the remaining water sources, offering exceptional game viewing opportunities.

Katavi is particularly famous for its large herds of buffalo, elephants, and hippos. The Katuma River, which meanders through the park, becomes a gathering point for these animals, especially during the dry season. It’s not uncommon to witness hundreds of hippos wallowing together in the river’s pools.

Predators such as lions, leopards, and wild dogs also inhabit the park, often preying on the abundant herbivore populations. The park’s remote location and low visitor numbers ensure a sense of exclusivity and unspoiled wilderness for those fortunate enough to visit.
