Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Highlight

Udzungwa Mountains National Park, established in 1992, is a biodiversity hotspot in southeastern Tanzania. Spanning approximately 1,990 square kilometers, the park encompasses a variety of ecosystems, including Miombo woodlands, rainforests, and montane forests. The terrain features rolling hills, valleys, and the prominent Luhomero peak, which rises to 2,576 meters above sea level.

The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting numerous endemic species. Notably, it is home to the endangered Iringa red colobus monkey and the Sanje mangabey, both of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Additionally, the Udzungwa partridge and the Rufous-winged sunbird are among the unique avian species residing here.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers a network of well-maintained trails, making it a haven for hikers. One of the most popular routes leads to the Sanje Waterfall, a multi-tiered cascade that plunges over 170 meters. Along the trails, visitors can encounter diverse flora and fauna, including various primates, birds, and amphibians.

The park’s varied landscapes, from lowland acacia and miombo forests to high montane forests and grasslands, provide a unique opportunity to experience different ecosystems within a single area. This diversity contributes to its designation as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.
