Lake Eyasi

Highlight

Lake Eyasi, located in northern Tanzania, is a shallow, seasonal salt lake nestled within the Great Rift Valley, just southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater and south of Serengeti National Park. At an elevation of approximately 1,040 meters, the lake spans about 1,050 square kilometers, with its size fluctuating based on seasonal rainfall.

The area surrounding Lake Eyasi is renowned for its cultural significance, serving as home to the Hadzabe people, one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in East Africa, who have maintained their traditional lifestyle for over 10,000 years. Additionally, the Datoga community, skilled in agriculture and metalwork, resides nearby.

Ecologically, Lake Eyasi’s saline waters attract a variety of bird species, making it a notable spot for bird-watching enthusiasts. The lake’s water levels and salinity vary with the seasons, influencing the presence of different wildlife.

Visitors to Lake Eyasi can engage in cultural tours to experience the unique traditions of the Hadzabe and Datoga communities, offering a profound insight into their enduring ways of life.
