Mikumi National Park

Highlight

Mikumi National Park, established in 1964, is located in southeastern Tanzania, approximately 280 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam. Covering an area of 3,230 square kilometers, it ranks as the fourth largest national park in the country. The park is traversed by the A-7 highway, which divides it into two distinct regions: the alluvial plains of the Mkata River basin in the northwest and the less accessible southeastern area characterized by forests and acacia trees.

The park’s landscape is often compared to that of the Serengeti, featuring open savannahs dotted with acacia, baobab, tamarind, and some rare palm trees. The northwest region, near the Mkata River, is particularly rich in wildlife and offers opportunities for game viewing. Mikumi is home to a diverse array of animals, including elephants, zebras, impalas, elands, kudu, black antelope, baboons, wildebeests, and buffaloes. Notably, the park is one of the best places in Tanzania to observe tree-climbing lions.

Additionally, Mikumi boasts over 400 bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers. The park’s accessibility via the A-7 highway has made it a popular destination for both local and international tourists seeking a rich wildlife experience.
