Mkomazi National Park, located in northeastern Tanzania, spans approximately 3,245 square kilometers and shares a border with Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, forming the expansive Greater Tsavo Ecosystem. Established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to a national park in 2006, Mkomazi is characterized by its Acacia-Commiphora vegetation, ancient baobab trees, and isolated rocky hills.
This arid landscape supports a rich diversity of wildlife, including over 400 bird species and 78 mammal species. Notably, the park is home to the “Big Five”: lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinoceroses, and leopards.
Conservation efforts have successfully reintroduced endangered species such as the African wild dog and the black rhinoceros, enhancing the park’s ecological significance. Despite its remarkable biodiversity, Mkomazi remains less frequented by tourists, offering visitors a serene and intimate wildlife experience amidst stunning vistas of hills, mountains, and open plains.
Drive 120km from Moshi or 160km from Arusha to the park
