Selous Game Reserve National Park

Highlight

Selous Game Reserve, now part of Nyerere National Park, is one of Africa’s largest protected areas, spanning approximately 50,000 square kilometers in southern Tanzania. Established in 1922 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, the reserve is renowned for its rich biodiversity and relatively undisturbed ecosystems. The landscape is characterized by diverse habitats, including miombo woodlands, open grasslands, wetlands, and the prominent Rufiji River, which meanders through the reserve, creating a complex network of channels, lakes, and swamps.

This variety supports a remarkable array of wildlife, with significant populations of elephants, black rhinoceroses, cheetahs, giraffes, hippopotamuses, and crocodiles. Notably, Selous is home to one of the largest concentrations of elephants and African wild dogs in the continent. Unlike many other reserves, Selous offers unique safari experiences such as boat safaris on the Rufiji River and walking safaris, allowing visitors to explore its pristine wilderness intimately. Despite its size and ecological significance, the reserve remains less frequented by tourists, offering a secluded and authentic wildlife experience.
